Since moving to Colorado for college, it's been really hard for me to bring myself to the gym. Between the mountains, the flowers, the lack of humidity, & the sunny skies; there's just too much beauty outside to be confined to a treadmill, or stuffy weight room! One of the most common excuses I hear people using to avoid working out is, "but I hate the gym." Listen to me when I say this: the gym is not everything. Sure, it's a great place to build muscle, burn calories, tone up & overall get a workout in. However, there are so many other ways to be active and stay healthy without being cooped up in a gym all day with a bunch of sweaty people! Not ragging on you sweaty people, only the ones who use the machines and don't wipe them down after. You guys aren't cool. Anyways, if you're one of those people who hate the gym, keep reading below as I mention a few different ways you can get your exercise on! And I promise, these activities are actually enjoyable.
Get Sporty- rally up a group of friends and go play y'alls favorite sport! Go to a beach court and play some volleyball, toss the football around in your backyard, or grab a friend and go play some tennis. If you're thinking, "I don't play any sports though." Well my answer to that is it's never too late to try something new. Plus, it's a great way to be both social and active!
Go for a hike or run on a trail- So, since I'm out in Colorado now, I go on a short hike almost every other day. However, I'm from Florida, so I obviously understand that not everyone has a mountain in their backyard. Finding a running/biking trail is the next best thing for all my flat land folks. It's no invigorating hike, but finding a scenic trail with wildflowers, swampland, or pretty trees to look at can be just as good at distracting you from the fact that you're actually exercising! Bring your dog or your best pal, whichever company you prefer.
Ditch motorized transportation/Uber- My first half of freshman year in Savannah, I didn't have immediate and convenient access to my car. With that being said, I tended to bike or walk everywhere and I remember saying to a friend one time that if we kept this up we'd be jacked by the end of the school year, lol. Turns out, I got a convenient parking space the second half of school and no longer made much use of my bike. Coming out to Colorado, though, I left my car at home and now I bike or walk to class or to get food every day! Honestly, sometimes on the days where I have 3 classes, I skip working out all together because my legs are dead from biking everywhere, lol. Making this small change from driving to biking can most definitely help to keep you in shape. Also, if you plug in some headphones, play some pretty tunes, and enjoy the breeze it can be a great way to relax and decompress from the stress of life, amiright?
Go swimming- I feel like swimming is such an underrated activity, but let me tell you, it's a killer workout. Swimming burns so many calories and most of the time, you don't even have to be putting in that much effort. Okay, you have to put in effort; but you definitely don't have to swim 50 laps every time you take a dip in the pool. Just make sure you're always moving in the water and that you're getting that heart rate up.
Get your shop on- Also, a really underrated activity, especially in the eyes of (almost all) men. If you've ever been on a full day shopping excursion, you know how much walking back and forth to stores and from one side of the mall to the other entails. You could literally go shopping with a friend, wear a Fitbit, and get all 10,000 of your recommended daily steps in within just a few short hours. It's no cycling class, but if you're looking for ways to incorporate more movement or low-impact exercise into your day, grab your wallet and take yourself out to the mall! Shopping and burning calories? Sounds like my kinda day.
